Twizel

Twizel is a relaxed town in the south of the basin, built in 1968 for the hydro scheme and now the closest town to Aoraki/Mt Cook. It is surrounded by lakes, rivers and cycle trails.

OUR FAVOURITE THINGS TO DO

Twizel, our way

Lake Pukaki

The view of Aoraki across the water is the Mackenzie’s most famous; stop at the salmon shop for fresh sashimi.

Lake Ōhau

A short drive to one of the region’s most peaceful lakes.

Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail

New Zealand’s longest continuous cycle trail passes through Twizel; ride sections from the door.

Clay Cliffs of Omarama

Dramatic eroded pinnacles, 30 minutes south.

Lake Ruataniwha

Calm water for kayaking, paddle-boarding and picnics.

Fishing

The hydro canals are renowned for large trout and salmon.

WHY STAY IN TWIZEL?

Quieter, and closer to the mountains

Quieter, closer to Aoraki/Mt Cook, and ideal for early-morning hikes and cycling.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Twizel questions

How far is Twizel from Aoraki/Mt Cook?

About 50 minutes’ drive along the shore of Lake Pukaki.

Is Twizel or Tekapo better for stargazing?

Both sit inside the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, so the skies are exceptional in either. Lake Tekapo has the Dark Sky Project and Mt John Observatory; Twizel is quieter, with very little light from the township.

Can I cycle the Alps 2 Ocean from Twizel?

Yes. The Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail passes through Twizel, so you can ride sections straight from town – we can arrange e-bikes, routes and pick-ups.
