QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
Local questions
Is the Hooker Valley Track worth doing with a guide?
The track is well formed and easy to follow on your own. A guide adds local stories, the best timing for light and crowds, and safety knowledge in changeable weather – especially welcome at sunrise or in winter.
Can I see the aurora australis from Tekapo?
Yes, occasionally. The aurora australis is visible from the Mackenzie during periods of strong solar activity, best seen looking south on clear, dark nights – most often through the longer nights of autumn and winter. We’ll let you know when alerts look promising.
What can we do on a rainy day?
Soak in the hot pools at Tekapo Springs, visit the Dark Sky Project in Lake Tekapo, explore the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre at Aoraki/Mt Cook, or stay in with a catered lunch and an in-home massage.
