Tekapo vs Twizel vs Aoraki/Mt Cook Village: Where Should You Stay?
Written by Hollie, Lake Tekapo local · Last updated October 2026
The quick answer
The best base depends on what you want from your trip:
Stay in Lake Tekapo for the lake views, the Church of the Good Shepherd, stargazing tours and the widest choice of places to stay and eat. It's the best all-round base, and the easiest stop between Christchurch and Queenstown.
Stay in Twizel for the most central and best-value base. It's 40 minutes from Tekapo and 45 minutes from Aoraki/Mt Cook, with a supermarket, fuel and good-value accommodation.
Stay in Aoraki/Mt Cook Village to wake up in the mountains and start hiking straight from your door. It's the best base for walkers, but it's tiny, with few places to eat and changeable weather.
Many travellers split their stay – for example, two nights in Tekapo and one night at Aoraki/Mt Cook.

Staying in Lake Tekapo

Best for: first-time visitors, couples, families, stargazers and anyone who wants the classic Mackenzie views.
Lake Tekapo (Takapō) is the best-known town in the Mackenzie and the easiest to love. The turquoise lake sits right on the edge of the village, the Church of the Good Shepherd is a short walk away, and the night sky is one of the clearest in the world.
Why stay here
The widest choice of accommodation in the region, from holiday parks to luxury lakeside homes.
Guided stargazing tours, the Tekapo Springs hot pools, Mt John and the lakefront are all on your doorstep.
A good choice of cafes and restaurants, plus a supermarket and fuel.
It's right on State Highway 8, so it's an easy stop on a Christchurch–Queenstown road trip.
Good to know
Aoraki/Mt Cook is about 1 hour 15 minutes away – an easy day trip, but a full day.
The lakefront and church get busy in the middle of the day in summer and lupin season.
Stay here if: this is your first time in the Mackenzie, stargazing is a must, or you want a relaxed base with views and plenty to do. Read more in our guide: Is Lake Tekapo Worth Visiting? (And How Long to Stay)
Staying in Twizel

Best for: budget and mid-range travellers, road trippers, cyclists, anglers and anyone exploring the whole region.
Twizel was built in the late 1960s as a town for workers on the Upper Waitaki hydro scheme, and it's now the Mackenzie's most practical base. It doesn't have a lakefront village like Tekapo, but it sits right in the middle of everything – and it's often better value.
Why stay here
The most central base: about 45 minutes to Aoraki/Mt Cook and 40 minutes to Lake Tekapo.
Good value accommodation, from holiday parks to motels and holiday homes.
Everyday essentials: a supermarket, fuel, cafes, bars, a medical centre and a pharmacy.
Lake Pukaki, Lake Ruataniwha and Lake Ōhau are close by, along with salmon farms on the canals.
Several day rides on the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail start from town, and Ōhau Snow Fields is nearby in winter.
Good to know
The town itself is quiet and practical rather than scenic – the views are a short drive away.
There are fewer guided tours based in town than in Tekapo.
Stay here if: you want to see both Aoraki/Mt Cook and Tekapo without long drives, you're travelling on a budget, or you're heading south to Wanaka or Queenstown next.
Staying in Aoraki/Mt Cook Village

Best for: hikers, photographers, mountain lovers and anyone who wants to be right in the national park.
Aoraki/Mt Cook Village sits inside Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park, surrounded by New Zealand's highest peaks. It's a tiny alpine village – home to a permanent population of only a couple of hundred people – but the setting is extraordinary.
Why stay here
Wake up beneath Aoraki/Mt Cook, New Zealand's highest mountain.
Walk straight to the Hooker Valley Track, Kea Point and the Tasman Glacier area without driving back and forth.
Be on the trail early, before the day-trip crowds arrive.
The DOC visitor centre is in the village – a great first stop for track and weather updates.
The night sky is spectacular, with mountains all around.
Good to know
There's no supermarket. The village has a small store, a handful of restaurants and bars (mostly at the hotel) and a self-service fuel pump. The nearest supermarket is in Twizel, 65 km away – stock up before you arrive.
Accommodation is limited, from a campground and lodges to the hotel, so book early in summer.
The weather is much more changeable than in Tekapo or Twizel. The mountains can disappear behind cloud for a day or two.
It's a dead end – you'll drive back out the same way you came in.
Stay here if: hiking is the main reason for your trip, you want a sunrise in the mountains, or you'd like one special night in the national park.
